Welcome to our story
Before every Saint Anne’s Belfield football game played between 1997-2021, the team collectively recited the Man in the Glass, a poem by Peter Dale Wimbrow Sr. The poem is a reflection on the importance of self-discipline, self-esteem and self-love.
“The fellow whose verdict counts most in your life is the one staring back in the glass”
Yes, team sports rely on one’s ability to work well with a group of people, but there are moments leading up to and during the team events where the athlete must face changes within themselves. Do they have the discipline, courage, and toughness to conquer the challenges within?
The Man in the Glass Initiative was created to provide an opportunity for those who have less to face these challenges. Our goal is to provide access to the best education in Central Virginia, meaningful mentorship and a support system that will ensure that the beneficiaries of the Initiative have the life skills necessary to illuminate their path to a meaningful future.
MIGI assistance recipients will be required to display a drive to be a good citizen and student, not just an athlete. MIGI will not just be a scholarship program. We will be the support group for the recipients(need a better name for this). Whether it is tutoring, training or listening, it is MIGI’s responsibility to ensure that every young person enrolled in the Initiative is backed by the members.
We have an opportunity to provide monumental change the lives of deserving young people. It is our responsibility to take advantage of this opportunity. This is our mission, our purpose and our promise.
